Culture and Economy of Gujarat

Gujarat Culture and Economy Gujarat is a state in central India.  It is most known for the large part it played in the economic history of the country as one of the main commerce and trade centers.  One of the world’s first ever ports was built in the city and even to this day Gujarat has one of the quickest growing economies in India.

Gujarat has significant agricultural and industrial productions.  Agriculturally the state is the main producer in India of groundnuts, cotton and tobacco.  The state also produces a number of other crops including rice, maize, wheat and bajra.  Over half of the land area of the state is used for harvesting crops so it is not surprising that the state has some of the biggest harvests throughout the whole of India.  Dairy farming also plays an important part in the economy of Gujarat with over one million people employed by the trade.  The state is the largest producer of milk throughout India with livestock including buffalo, cows, goats and sheep.

Industrially, Gujarat is one of the most industrialized states in India.  A variety of industries make their home in the state including electrical engineering, textiles, fertilizers and petrol.  The state is also rich in mineral deposits with limestone, bauxite, calcite, manganese and quartz sand all being mined in the province.  With a thermal power station, car making factories and many private investors in the state it is clear to see why the state has enjoyed continuous growth over the last twenty years.

The state of Gujarat is full of ethnic and tribal minorities and so it is unsurprising that the area is full of many different cultures.  Individual ethnicities blend together with the traditional Gujarati culture to produce some astounding festivals, cuisines, dances and music.  The best way to see the culture of Gujarat is during festival time.  Among the local festivals one of the most intriguing is the International Kite Festival when the local people all flock to the streets to fly kites to celebrate the end of winter.

Gujarat cuisine is a very important part of the state’s culture and was the place where the vindaloo dish originated.  Vegetables tend to be the main ingredients in Gujarat cuisine, blended together with a mix of garam masala spices.  The Gujarat people love tangy meals and tend to add much lemon and lime to their dishes.  The best time to try the cuisine is during one of the festivals when sweets are also made in abundance as well as main dish favorites like cholafali.
