Haryana is a state located in the north of India. Bordered by Punjab, it is one of the most prosperous regions in the country. The state has the third largest capita income in the country and is known as one of the most economically developed regions in South Asia. The state has experienced a mass economic growth in the last forty years that is set to continue.
The economy in the state relies mainly on manufacturing, retail and agriculture. The state is home to a number of foreign investors which has seen the state become one of the most industrialized in India. The state is also a banking hub with over 4500 branches making their home in the Haryana. More than one thousand medium sized businesses are located in the state which gives Haryana a 50% production share of cars, 30% production share of refrigerators and a 20% of the export share for scientific instruments. World renowned countries including Sony, Whirlpool and Honda all have industry in the state.
Despite the industrialization, Haryana is principally an agricultural region. Around 70% of the state’s citizens are employed in agriculture making the state self-supporting in food supplies and is the second principal supplier of food to the rest of India. Rice and wheat are the major crops produced in Haryana with others including cotton, sugarcane, maize, barley and pulses. Tobacco and mustard are also produced in the region. Around 86% of the state of Haryana is arable land, making dairy farming another productive business. The state is the second biggest supplier of milk in India and is a large part of the local people’s diet.
Culturally, Haryana has a vibrant culture that dates back hundreds of years. The region is filled with folklore and old age customs of yoga, meditation and chanting are still performed throughout the state. The state is home to a number of festivals throughout the year which are celebrated with much enthusiasm by the local population. Dance is believed to be the mother of all arts, and during festival time many perform dances to release emotion and worry whilst at the same time entertaining all who watch.
Due to the diversity of races and beliefs in the state the culture also tends to be varied. One thing is for sure though and that is that the people are engrossed in age old traditions and will encapsulate tourists with their displays and words for years to come. The language in Haryana tends to be mainly Hindi and Punjabi although English is widely spoken in most of the major cities throughout the state
