Himachal Pradesh is a state in the north of India. Initially part of Punjab, the state now has one of the highest incomes per capita of any of the Indian states. The economy of Himachal Pradesh is mainly dependent on three things- agriculture, tourism and hydroelectric power. From one of the most backward states in India the plan enabled the state to become one of the most forward within 50 years.
Agriculture makes up around 45% of the state’s revenue with 93% of the local population employed in this trade in one way or another. The main crops produced in the country include cereals whilst fruit is also a booming cultivation. The Himachal Pradesh government has recently taken steps to cultivate more specific crops including figs, olives, mushrooms and hops. Due to the vast amount of apples produced in the state, Himachal Pradesh has gained the name of the ‘Apple State of India’.
The region is rich in hydroelectric resources and contributes to around 25% of the Indian nation. Through hydel projects on the rivers the state has generated over 20,000MW of electricity. Himachal Pradesh is also home to a number of industries but due to a lack of dependable transport the growth in this area has stunted for the meanwhile. The government is currently offering a number of incentives to encourage businesses to choose the state as their base, and at present a number of electronics companies have taken up the offer.
Located in the Himalayas, the state of Himachal Pradesh is truly beautiful. The culture of the state is very traditional yet extravagant and the local population are very proud of their state. A number of different communities make Himachal Pradesh their home including the Rajputs, the Kannets and the Brahmins. As well as these there are a number of tribal communities; these all contribute to the culture of the state, especially during local festival time!

Music and dance performances are revered by tourists of all ages and it is definitely said that the best time to visit is during one of the festival seasons.
