Maharashtra is a state located in the west of India. It is the third largest state in India and the second most populated. Maharashtra is the second most urbanized state in India and is the richest state in the country. It houses many large corporations, banks and financial institutions as well as the Bollywood film and television industry.
Although Maharashtra is a highly industrialized state, agriculture still makes up the majority of the state’s revenue. The main crops grown in the city include sugarcane, cotton, onions, wheat, grains and rice. Maharashtra is also home to huge fruit cultivations with mangoes, grapes, bananas and oranges all being produced in the state. Some of the main industries in the state include automobiles, plastic, electronics and pharmaceuticals – industries which provide a good employment for a number of people. Maharashtra contributes 40% of India’s revenue on a yearly basis, with Mumbai (the administrative capital) known as the financial capital of India.
Maharashtra is a vast state and the people are very proud of their history and culture. The state has been bestowed with the title of the state of culture and it is not hard to see why. There are numerous festivals celebrated throughout the year in the state, all of them accompanied with some fabulous music and dance performances. The music in the state is based on ancient traditions and folk songs are a large part of everyday life as well as festivities. Maharashtra has a number of different types of dances including the Povada dance (portraying the achievements of Shivaji Maharaj), the Lavani and Koli dances (mesmerizing rhythmic dances), and the Tamasha dance (popular throughout the state).
The local food is a large factor of the culture in Maharashtra. The delicious cuisine varies in each area of the state with coconut (often cooked in peanut oil) being a main ingredient in almost every area. Popular foods tend to include rice as the main staple, fish, local vegetables and nuts. Chicken and mutton are often used in place of fish. A typical meal usually ends with a delicious sweet with the shreekhand and puran poli being amongst the favorites.
