Tamil Nadu is located in the southernmost part of the Indian Peninsula. It is large and highly populated, its size being similar to Greece. Its cultural attractions are vast and include unique and old forms of art which continue to flourish today. The Tamil language is highly important for the cultural identity of the Tamil people. Besides, this language was the first to be recognized as a classical Indian language.
Poetry is extremely popular amongst the locals, yet its universal appeal cannot be denied if we take into account the Tirukkural, which was written nearly 2000 years ago and still attracts readers from all around the world. Major festivals such as Pongal excite tourists and inhabitants alike, while smaller-scaled celebrations are held once a year in the honor of the local gods. Most of these festivals are dedicated to Maariyamman, the grand goddess of rain.
Music is one of the most vibrant traditions for the inhabitants of Tamil Nadu, including various forms of Tamil folk music or the Carnatic music, which is one of the world’s oldest musical traditions. Folk dances are also highly appreciated, and are performed whenever possible to announce the birth of a child, the arrival of a season, and of course, during wedding ceremonies or during festivals. The Indian film industry is famous for Bollywood as well, which is another name for the Tamil film industry.
Tamil Nadu is perceived as having the highest level of urbanization in India; however, it is still a leading producer for agricultural food items. Its main crops include rice, fruits like mangos and bananas, vegetables like tapioca, tomatoes and onions among others. Tamil Nadu is also a leader in the production of flowers, its main species including jasmine, marigold, rose, chrysanthemum and mullai.
Tamil Nadu is the second largest poultry provider, and having the third longest coastline in India, it is a large provider for fishery products as well. The agriculture domain is continuously evolving due to the contribution of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University; efforts are being made towards improving the technology used for managing new crop varieties.
