The state of Uttar Pradesh is located in the North of India. It is the most populated state in the country with a population of over 190 million people. With such a large area that encompasses part of the highly fertile Gangetic plain, it is not surprising that crops grow really well in the state. The state also attracts high numbers of tourists on a yearly basis.
Uttar Pradesh is the second most economic state in India. Most of the revenue made by the state is through agriculture which accounts for 46% of the state’s income. The state has a food surplus unlike most of the states in the country with crops including potatoes, rice, wheat and pulses. The area is also abundant for fishing, and much of the countries livestock is supported in the state. In recent years Uttar Pradesh has experienced a massive growth in its industry with IT companies and electronics companies making the state their home. Other revenue made in the state comes from handicrafts, cement manufacture and limestone.
Aside from the above, Uttar Pradesh is a tourist haven and enjoys large numbers of visitors each year. Home to the Taj Mahal, an amazing tiger reserve and many ancient buildings it is clear to see why many people choose to visit the state on their holidays. The Ganges also passes through the state so many people have the option to visit the state for a couple of days whilst on a cruise tour.
Culturally there is a lot to see in Uttar Pradesh. The state has colonial British architecture in many of the big cities as well as a number of medieval monuments including forts and palaces. The state is also famous for its arts and crafts, with many cities being host to a specific craft. Popular craft making places include Kanpur (for its leather), Kannauj (for its perfume), Lucknow (for its cloths) and Saharanpur (for its wood carvings).

The state is also home to a traditional style of dance and music, as it was once the music center of India during the era of Guptas. Kathak – an Indian dance form came to life in Uttar Pradesh and is now renowned throughout the world. The state is also host to a number of religious festivals throughout the year with the most important being the Hindu festivals of Diwali, Dashehra and Holi.
