Gandhi Jayanti FestivalGandhi Jayanti is a national holiday to celebrate the birth anniversary of the father of the Nation. He was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a man who played the most important role in India’s Independence typically through his weapon called simplicity and non- violence with a strong will power. Also popularly known as Bapu by the Indians, he was born on 2nd October, 1869 in Porbunder, Gujarat. In honor of him 2nd October is also celebrated as International Day of Non Violence throughout the world. He was a lawyer by profession. But for the sake of his country he left his profession and came back to India to join the Indian freedom battle against the British.

Historical Contributions
It was this man whole was responsible mostly for the freedom we enjoy nowadays. A man, bespectacled, short and mild natures leaded the mass of India to its goal for nearly three decades. After his early education which started at the age of 7years, he went on to London and qualified as a barrister. He then practiced in South Africa and then returned to India when Gopal Krishna Gokhale Initiated him for the struggle for Independence. He was a keen political leader. In fact he never identified him different from the mass whom he leaded. That is what has made him so popular not only among the Indians but also to the British too. When others walked out to express protest, Gandhiji walked 100s of Km to Dandi to take salt illegally.

 

Origin of the Day
Gandhi Jayanti did not command celebrations still the week starting on October 2nd is special and filled the Indians with excitement. It is mostly celebrated in the schools. On this day schools are generally over by noon. And on the 2nd half of the day children would dig up at the backyards of the school and plant saplings. Various other jobs for the society are also done specially supply of free medicine to the poor, painting of community walls and various other. It is the Indian way of remembering the Great Soul’s contribution to the Nation.

National Customs
Prayers services and tributes are made in the Raj Ghat, Gandhi’s memorial. Prayers and meeting are done along with various competitions for children. Usually the favorite song of Gandhiji, Raghu Pati Raghav, is sung on this day.
