Kolkata Airport

Before it is renamed Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport it was originally known as Dum Dum Airport. It is near Kolkata of West Bengal in India. There are two parallel runways namely 01/19 L/R and 01R/19L. One is used for landings and the other is mostly use as a taxiway. The Airport is 17 km away from the city center and it has given an innovative look recently. Within its three terminals the domestic terminal is opened in the early 1990s, whereas the international terminal is the oldest one and it has a cargo terminal also.

As both in world aviation and in Indian aviation Kolkata airport has a distinguished place now a days the Airport Authority of India is trying to give the air port a new look. A fourth terminal is going to be built as the number of passenger is increasing from the last three to four years. Another steps have also been taken to modernize the airport that includes the lengthening the runways. Again the airport is linked with the suburban railway system. It can be said for all those reasons it is one of the top five airports in India while 270 flights everyday lands and flies from here.

Though at present the annual passenger handling capacity of Kolkata airport is 0.73 million international and 4.7 million domestic a report says that in 2006-07 the growth is in case of international is 12% and in case of domestic is 20%. Airport Authority of India expects that the recently added cargo terminal could fulfill the e demand up to 2015-16.

The government decided that with cooperation of public-private partnership (PPP) the Kolkata airport should be modernized with an investment of Rs.2000 core.
